11/20/12: New on Home Entertainment

Obviously we can't review every film on the podcast, but that doesn't mean we don't have opinions. Each week Jacob and Pat will offer a couple quick words on the new DVD/Blu-ray releases, and if you're thinking about buying it, we've provided a quick link over to Amazon.

A bigger sequel that delivers the guilty pleasures promised by it's predecessor.
Dumb action will always find a place in my viewing habits, I'm just not rushing out to rent it.

Ken Burns is at his best when he's focused on a specific historical figure or period.   I look forward to finding the four hours it will take to watch this.
Who doesn't like a little historic perspective on a less than defined period in our shared history. To be honest thought... I'll probably see Expendables 2 before the Dust Bowl.

Time Travel and 2012 Film Exposition

Image
When it comes to storytelling devices it is hard to beat time travel. Traveling back in time to fix a mistake, kill a villian, stop a war, save someone dying, warn humanity, hide from someone... the intrigue heightening/cheating power of time travel is hard to resist. A perfect example of the utilization of time travel, but not center stage discussion of it, are three widely celebrated films from this year; Looper, Sound of my Voice, and Safety Not Guaranteed.

If you ever take a screenwriting course one of the first things you'll learn is about character development and backstory. Who are your characters and why do we care about them? Time-travel films almost always deal with characters traveling through time to confront some aspect of their personal history, either literally or figuratively. Does a character have to physically travel through time and space to be a time traveler? To be a dime story philosopher, one could argue that any film where a character is overly nostalgic, …

FWOAC 20 - Skyfall / Bond History Lesson

Filmcast Without a Cause's two rats fight for who's opinion of Skyfall is right. Finally, since Bond has now appeared in 25+ films and televisions show, Jacob gives us a little history lesson on the character.

Holiday Movie Season Preview
We decided James Bond was too big a charactor not too go deep on his history, so... Next week, Jacob and Pat breakdown which films they're looking forward to most over the next few months and which films they think have the best chance of taking home shiny statues. JacobThe Amazing SpidermanPat A great cast keeps this reboot from being redundant.
A Slightly darker and more mopey Spiderman than audiences know, nothing groundbreaking, but fun.

JacobBravePat (haven't seen)
Far from Pixar's best effort, but a sweet and funny fairytale nonetheless.
Interested, but doesn't seem to have the unique hook necessary for me to tune into any animated film.

JacobPixar Short Collections 2Pat

While some of the shorts in this collection are simply DVD extras, all are incredibly charming examples of what makes Pixar great.
I love short films and these films are some of the best. I want this, pronto.

Filmcast Without a Cause retreats into the world of classic videogaming after the debacle that was missing the Lucasfilms-Disney announcement.
